I have no adequate words of comfort, but I want to say thank you for writing this and bringing your readers' attention to what is happening around you. Just donated and will invite others as well. Thank you for the link.
Donated. I'm so sorry; I'm a NC native and am devastated to see the damage. Like you said- it's supposed to be safe so no one was prepared or warned. Entire cities, drowned. I wasn't able to contact my elderly parents in Robbinsville for four days. The EMS line was down and my husband couldn't fly there because the airstrip (miles away but we would have walked) in the closest valley was washed out. My sister ended up convincing someone on Facebook who knew my dad to drive there to check on them. They had no idea what happened anywhere else, or that we would be worried, so they just acted like it was one of the many intermittent outages that happen at that elevation. When the mountain roads were passable and he was able to drive into what was left of the town, he was shocked. It's heartbreaking and I wish you the absolute best of luck in recovering. It took Miami years to recover from Andrew and NOLA years to recover from Katrina. I have a feeling it's going to be like that.
Since I live in the West, I’m more familiar with the neighborhood burning down than flooding. I’ve never been to North Carolina, but it seems oddly close, since I’ve heard from you so often over the years. Sent a few $$ to the NC Red Cross.
Thank you for your articulate, detailed personal reporting. ♥️

I’m so, so glad your parents are safe
Wow, it's hell on Earth. I can't even begin to imagine. I'm glad you and Jon are safe.
